Common Microsoft sign-up and log-in problems, and how to resolve them
This article helps if you're trying to sign up for an account or log in to .id (Informed Decisions) tools using your Microsoft account and seeing an error. It applies across the Local Government Suite – Community Profile, Social Atlas, Population Forecast, Economic Profile, Housing Monitor and Community Views. It covers the most common Microsoft sign-in issues and how to fix them.
Symptoms
You're seeing one of these:

Microsoft tells you your email isn't recognised – for example, 'This username may be incorrect' or '[domain] isn't in our system'.

Microsoft shows a 'Need admin approval' message asking your IT department to grant permission for the .id app.

How to resolve
Microsoft says my email isn't recognised
The Microsoft sign-in option works only if your organisation uses Microsoft to manage staff identities (the same as logging in to Outlook). If it doesn't, or if there's a typo in your email, Microsoft won't recognise the address.

To fix this:

Check that you've entered your email correctly – particularly the part after the @ symbol.

Confirm that your organisation manages staff sign-in through Microsoft. Your IT department can confirm this if you're not sure.

If your organisation doesn't use Microsoft, log in with your email instead. On the sign-up or log-in form, choose 'Log in with email' rather than 'Log in with Microsoft'.
Microsoft says I need admin approval
You see a screen titled 'Need admin approval' that explains '.id consulting needs permission to access resources in your organisation that only an admin can grant'.
