Q:
I was wondering if there is a way to view SA1 detail as a defined square metre grid? Or have all SA1’s of equal size / versions of a size (if privacy is an issue) i.e. 100m2 , 1000m2, 10000 m2
Currently I am having issues with the SA1 methodology given gradient heat maps are skewed by the random hectare assigned to the SA1, so although I can correlate certain densities, it is hard to compare immediately located SA1 tiles as they have differing density based on the ~random area assigned.
A:
The ABS do have a square kilometre grid, based on mesh-blocks

But I’m unaware of anything which can go smaller than that. You may be better off using Mesh Blocks however. Compared to SA1s, the densities will be much more accurate because generally parkland and uninhabited areas are split off as separate meshblocks which are based on land-use.
We don’t have them in atlas.id, due to the randomisation of data at that level. But you can download mesh blocks from the ABS website, and get population and dwelling counts at this link
(If you need other data, you can download from Tablebuilder, or we can do so for you as a long-term client, if you only want one or two basic tables, at no charge. If you need a lot of data there would be a fee).
