# How domestic visitor data is reported in Economic Profile

## Why the domestic visitor series starts at 2025/26

Domestic visitor figures in Economic Profile start at the 2025/26 financial year. This article explains why the series starts at the 2025/26 financial year, and what you'll find on the tourism pages. It's written for council staff who use visitor data for reporting, strategy or economic development work.

### How domestic visitors are measured

#### Measurement changed in 2025

Domestic visitors are Australians travelling within Australia, either staying overnight or visiting for the day. Tourism Research Australia (TRA) measures them and supplies the figures shown in Economic Profile.

Up to the end of 2024, TRA measured domestic visitors through the National Visitor Survey. From the start of 2025 it moved to a different method, Domestic Tourism Statistics, which counts travel in a different way. The two methods produce different results for the same area over the same period.

International visitors aren't measured this way. They come from a separate survey that wasn't affected.

#### Figures from the two periods can't be combined

TRA advises against comparing figures produced by the two methods, and it doesn't produce the current method's figures for years before 2025 below state level. There's no way to extend the current series backwards for a local government area.

At .id (Informed Decisions), we don't show the earlier figures alongside the current ones. A chart running one method up to 2024 and the other from 2025 would show a change in how visitors are counted, and most readers would take it for a change in how many people visited.

The 2024/25 financial year sits across the changeover, with two quarters measured each way, so there's no reliable annual figure for it either. The domestic series therefore begins at 2025/26, the first full financial year measured consistently.

### What you'll find on the tourism pages

- **Domestic visitor figures from 2025/26 onwards.** Overnight visitors, day visitors, visitor nights and average length of stay, updated each year as TRA releases new data.
- **International visitor figures over a longer period.** These come from a survey that wasn't affected by the 2025 change, so the series runs back further.
- **Benchmarks at local government, state and national level.** TRA supplies domestic figures for local government areas, so benchmark areas assembled from smaller geographies aren't available.
- **Some figures withheld where samples are small.** TRA withholds any figure based on fewer than 40 responses, so a category may show no value in a given year. This applies to international, overnight and day visitors alike.

If your council needs domestic figures for years before 2025, staff from subscribing councils can request them by emailing support@id.com.au.

### Frequently asked questions

**Why doesn't our site show domestic visitor data before 2025/26?**

Those years were measured a different way and can't be compared with the current figures. The data still exists and you can request it by emailing support@id.com.au.

**We have earlier visitor figures from an old report. Can we compare them with the current ones?**

No. They were produced by a different method, and TRA advises against comparing the two. If you need long-run context, present the two periods separately and note that the measurement method changed in 2025.

**Why is there no domestic figure for 2024/25?**

That financial year spans the changeover. Two of its quarters were measured under the earlier method and two under the current one, so there's no defensible way to produce a single annual figure for it.

**We report visitor numbers in our council plan. What should we measure against?**

Use 2025/26 as your baseline and measure from there. A target set against figures from 2023/24 or earlier can't be carried across, so it's worth resetting the baseline at your next plan review.

**Can we benchmark against a smaller area, such as a suburb or SA2?**

No. TRA supplies domestic visitor figures for local government areas, which is the smallest geography available. Benchmarks are offered at local government, state and national level.

**Does this affect international visitor figures?**

No. International visitors are measured through a separate survey, and those figures are reported over a longer period.
